Mitsubishi Plastics to Launch X-BARRIER ™ Super High Gas Barrier Film

Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc.

Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc. (MPI, Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroshi Yoshida) will launch the super high gas barrier film X-BARRIER™ on July 1, 2008. Mitsubishi Plastics supplied its existing manufacturing customers with samples of X-Barrier for their evaluation. MPI’s customers have confirmed X-Barrier’s performance qualities, and MPI has decided to market the product not only in Japan but throughout the world.

Some of the X-BARRIERs™ achieve the world’s highest level of water vapor barrier properties, with a water vapor transmission rate of 10-4 g/m2/day, In addition to these superior water vapor barrier properties, they also have other gas barrier properties for oxygen and carbon dioxide. X-BARRIER™ high functional films provide solutions to meet the needs of customers through the ability to tailor functions such as heat resistance, high temperature and high humidity resistance, climate durability, and bending durability.

Although the typical target market for existing barrier films has been in the area of packaging materials, MPI’s newly developed products will result in increased use of flexible products in the field of information electronics. In addition, implementation of an extremely productive “roll-to-roll process*” will result in dramatically reduced costs. In the future, MPI expects “X-BARRIER” to play a key role in the development of next-generation video displays and solar batteries. With a sales goal of 5 Billion yen over the next three years, MPI will target high-level medical treatment and packaging materials for pharmaceutical products as well as pursuing further advances in gas barrier qualities through improved technologies.

[Future Uses]
(1) Information electronics field:   Semiconductor chips, device boards, organic EL displays,
organic solar batteries, electronic papers, etc.
(2) Packaging materials field:   Medical devices such as catheters, needles and threads for medical use and medical products such as eyewash and contact lenses.

* Roll-to-roll process: A process for manufacturing various devices by incorporating organic semiconductor materials on a roll-shaped film board similar to a printing process.
